Welcome - if you share my interest please join in.

Why such a forum ? Having been involved with the subject since 2001 there seems no place where people can share their views and concerns.

Is there a need to share views and concerns ? There is a very vocal lobby in support of the 'new greens' but I have found nowhere for those who support the concept of village greens in principle (I am a member of the Open Spaces Society) but feel the system has been abused to frustrate the wishes and plans of landowners. Time will tell if there is such a need - but at least there is now a place.

How did I become involved in this subject ? In January 2001 a group of people in Clun, Shropshire, decided to make an application to register a piece of glebe land as a town or village green via the Commons Registration Act 1965. As a trustee of the charity which owns the land self-help was the order of the day. A steep but fascinating learning curve started and and still continues. My first 'milestone' is found in Whitmey, R (on the application of) v The Commons Commissioners [2004] EWCA Civ 951. At the time my concern was for the financial well being of the charity - little then did I realise how widely the ripples of that case would spread.

Who will join the forum ? I hope anyone who has a concern that what is happening now was never the original purpose or intention of the Royal Commission on Common Land 1955-58. The Commission's report is a fascinating study of the history and complexity of common land and town or village greens in England and Wales.
